Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac made this etching, Vegetables and Mushrooms, with what looks like a real sense of freedom. The lines are all over the place, a bit scribbly, and that's what makes it so alive. It’s about process, about letting the hand lead. Check out the tabletop – see how it's not really flat? The lines wiggle and suggest the texture of the wood, almost like you could feel it. And those veggies! They’re just shapes and scribbles, but you know exactly what they are. The whole thing feels like a quick, honest look at everyday stuff, but it’s elevated. It reminds me a little of Morandi, that Italian painter who spent his life painting bottles. Segonzac, like Morandi, finds something really beautiful in the mundane. And like all good art, it leaves you with more questions than answers, which is how it should be.
