Curatorial notes
Isaac Vincentsz. van der Vinne created this undated vignette with ink, presenting a scene contained within an oval frame. The composition balances the earthly toil of plowing with a sense of optimistic vision, capturing "Hope plowing the land". Visually, our eyes are drawn to the contrast between the dark, solid form of the ox and the lighter, more delicate figure of Hope. Notice how the ox, rendered with strong, assertive lines, pulls the plow, while Hope walks alongside, her form defined by flowing lines suggesting movement and grace. In the background, buildings nestle, a rising sun hints at progress and prosperity. The Latin text framing the image is a structural element, reinforcing the theme. The visual language of the piece is an allegory, where each component—ox, plow, Hope, and sun—functions as a signifier within a semiotic system. The act of plowing transcends literal meaning to address themes of labor, faith, and future potential. In its formal arrangement and symbolic density, this small vignette invites us to reflect on how hope cultivates possibility.
