Dmytro Kavsan created "Sunset in the Serengeti" with what looks like oils, bringing to life a landscape where the wild meets the whimsical. I love the layers here; there’s this immediate sense of space, but then you notice the smaller details, like the figures gathered in the foreground. It's as if Kavsan is playing with scale, inviting us to look closely and then step back to see the bigger picture. The paint looks quite thin, lending itself to the smoothness of the rocks, though I wish I could see the surface up close. I imagine Kavsan thinking about the relationship between humans and nature, or maybe just wanting to create a world that’s both familiar and strange. It reminds me of other surrealist painters, but with its own unique, slightly off-kilter sensibility. And I’m always thrilled when artists create unexpected combinations; it reminds us that painting can be anything we want it to be.
