This linen damask cloth with a "Needles field" motif was designed by Chris Lebeau. It's all white, which makes you think about the process, about how patterns are made in the first place. I love that it is a textile and not a painting; it is something so totally useful. It has an abstract repeat pattern that feels like a flower or fireworks made up of tiny white on white dashes. It’s fascinating to think about how the design emerges from the material itself. The damask is woven in such a way that the pattern is created by the contrasting directions of the weave, which is just so cool. There’s a lightness and delicacy to the cloth that contrasts with the sharp points of the needle design. It makes me think about the work of Anni Albers, another textile artist who really pushed the boundaries between craft and fine art. In the end, everything is connected.
