Robert Frank's photograph, "The Fruit Peddler, 7 AM," captures a fleeting moment, maybe from the 1950s, with a raw, documentary feel. I wonder what it was like for Frank to be there, camera in hand, at that early hour. He probably felt like he was stealing a glance at real life. The composition feels immediate. The tones are contrasted, but still grayscale. The figures of the fruit peddler and the man carrying something, maybe another box, are caught in their early morning routines. I suppose Frank wanted to portray the everyday, unvarnished lives of ordinary people, which I find moving. Maybe he was thinking about Walker Evans, or other social documentarians, but with his own twist, his own way of framing the world. It's like a conversation between artists across time, each adding their voice to the story of what it means to be human. It's a good conversation to be having.
