Hilma af Klint painted The Large Figure Paintings, No. 5 Group 3, as a part of a series of abstract works, all exploring spiritual dimensions. I can imagine her, brush in hand, tentatively layering these delicate shades of blue, yellow, and pink. I see the circle form emerging, like a world within a world. The paint is thinly applied, almost translucent in areas, allowing the canvas to breathe. Those spiraling forms feel like they're in motion, expanding outwards, resonating with some unseen energy. It makes me think about Agnes Martin and her delicate grids. But Hilma, she was after something more, diving into unseen realms. That central motif, the pale figure with three white circles, feels like a key, a symbol of something profound. It’s as if she’s inviting us to contemplate the mysteries of life, creation, and consciousness, all through the act of painting. These artists are all in conversation with one another, even across time.
