This photograph, Leerlingen van Schule Schloss Salem tijdens een kampeertocht in Engeland, by an anonymous maker, captures a moment during a camping trip in England. It’s all in tones of grey, and the marks feel accidental, like the image has been coaxed into being rather than asserted. I love how the figures melt into the landscape, becoming part of the rocks and the sea. There’s a real sense of texture here, especially in the rocky outcrop where the students are perched. You can almost feel the roughness of the stone and the dampness of the air, it's as if the photograph itself is trying to evoke the sensation of place. The way the light catches the surface of the water is gorgeous too, it reminds me of brushstrokes in an abstract painting. Looking at this, I'm reminded of some of Gerhard Richter’s grey paintings. There's a similar ambiguity about what we're seeing, and a sense that the artist is more interested in the process of image-making than in capturing a specific scene. Art, like this photograph, is often about embracing uncertainty and finding beauty in the unexpected.
