Curatorial notes

This etching, "Herder wordt veranderd in wilde olijboom" was created by Theodor Matham. Notice how Matham uses line and shadow to evoke a sense of motion and transformation. The composition is divided into a series of vignettes, each carefully detailed, drawing us into a world of classical narrative. In the foreground, figures lounge amidst foliage, their forms rendered with fine lines that delineate muscle and fabric. Behind them, a group of dancing figures echoes the metamorphic theme of the artwork; the transformation of a shepherd into a wild olive tree. The bodies are captured in poses that suggest rhythm and ritual, but also the uncanny. Matham destabilizes traditional pastoral scenes, by infusing it with a sense of the surreal. This etching invites us to consider how nature and culture intertwine, challenging our understanding of fixed identities.
