Curatorial notes
Guillaume Chasteau created this print, “Holy Family with John the Baptist,” sometime in the 17th century. The composition is structured with the figures arranged in a pyramidal form, creating a sense of stability, with the background landscape adding depth. Chasteau employed a sophisticated use of line and texture through engraving. Notice how he varies the density and direction of lines to model forms, create tonal contrasts, and suggest the textures of skin, fabric, and foliage. The formal arrangement also relates to the theological and cultural meanings of the time. The classical architecture with draped fabric alludes to the Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven, while the sheep may symbolize the sacrificial lamb of God, adding layers of theological depth to the print. Consider how Chasteau combines formal elements with cultural codes to create a rich visual narrative that invites layers of contemplation and understanding.
