This 'Untitled' print by László Moholy-Nagy is all about process, it seems, where simple forms and mark-making generate a whole visual language. The material quality of the print is crucial; it's not trying to be anything other than ink on paper. Look at the stark contrast between the black and white, and how the flat shapes play with depth and space. The texture varies from solid planes to delicate lines and fields of dots, creating an almost architectural feel. Notice that one vertical block, how it’s divided into segments of varied marks. Moholy-Nagy was always experimenting with new technologies and ideas, looking to the future. Like his contemporary Anni Albers, the reduced palette allows the viewer to focus on form, which can then be used as a type of alphabet, where an art piece is like a sentence, with so many interpretations.
