Robert Henri painted this scene, *Procession in Spain*, using what looks like oil on canvas, and a fairly limited palette. See how the brushstrokes are visible, like you can almost see him moving the paint around? The texture isn’t smooth, you can see the individual marks building up the image. The way the figures are grouped, it’s less about details and more about the shapes they make together against the landscape. Especially the way he suggests rather than defines those figures in black. It gives the whole scene a sense of immediacy, like Henri was trying to capture a fleeting moment. Look how the colours blend, creating this hazy, dreamlike quality. It kind of reminds me of some of Manet’s looser, more atmospheric paintings, where the focus is on light and feeling rather than strict representation. I think art is like that, always talking to itself, with artists picking up on each other's vibes. It's less about one right answer, and more about all the different ways we can see and feel.
