Cuno Amiet made this painting of a Landscape near the River Aare with oil on canvas. Looking at the way Amiet put the paint down, it seems like he was really enjoying the process. There's a kind of dance between how he saw the landscape and what the paint could do. The surface has a beautiful, almost crumbly texture. In the trees you can see spots of red and green, not quite blending, like he’s trying to capture how light flickers through leaves. It gives the whole scene a lively feel. Notice the reflections in the water; they are more broken up, almost like the world is dissolving there. Amiet reminds me of Bonnard, in the way they both use colour to create an atmosphere, like a feeling you can almost taste. And like any good painting, it’s not about one right answer, but about opening up to all the different ways we can see and feel the world.
