Egbert Rubertus Derk Schaap made this landscape with a nude by the water with graphite on paper. It’s a drawing that feels urgent, like Schaap was trying to capture a fleeting moment, a mood. Look at the way he uses the graphite, almost scrubbing it onto the paper in some areas, and using sharper, more defined lines in others. There’s a real sense of texture, isn’t there? The dark smudges contrast with the lighter, almost scratchy lines, creating a kind of visual vibration. That central form could be a rock or a ruin. It looms over the landscape but seems to dissolve back into it at the same time. I think of Rodin’s drawings when I look at this. They both share this sense of capturing a feeling more than a specific scene, like the landscape is as much a state of mind as a place. Art’s ongoing conversation – isn’t that the best part?
