Here's Mr. Spiral, made by Alexander Calder with paint on canvas. I love how the bright red and blue kind of sandwich the pink head and yellow body, like a delicious, if slightly unsettling, dessert. Looking closer, it's all about these confident, juicy brushstrokes. The paint isn’t trying to hide anything; it’s thick and present, especially in that pink head, almost like a mask. And then those spirals! They give me such a kick, looping around like the world seen through a funhouse mirror. They are bold and unapologetic, not too precious, just right. It reminds me a bit of Guston’s later work, but with an extra dose of playful energy. It's cool to consider how artists riff off each other, creating a visual language that's always evolving, always keeping us guessing. Art doesn't always need to make perfect sense. Sometimes, the most interesting stuff happens when things get a little twisted.
