Anubis 2020

Eckart Hahn created this piece, titled *Anubis*, which merges ancient iconography with contemporary urban aesthetics. Hahn, a German artist born in 1971, creates work that often plays with the fusion of the historical and the contemporary. Here, Anubis, the Egyptian god associated with mummification and the afterlife, is reimagined. Instead of traditional robes and regalia, Hahn dresses Anubis in modern streetwear—a blue and brown hoodie paired with a chunky gold chain. This juxtaposition invites us to consider how ancient symbols and deities are recontextualized in today's world. The choice of attire can be read through the lens of cultural appropriation, and the ways in which different cultures borrow from one another, sometimes problematically.
