This engraving by Laurens Eillarts depicts a noble equestrian portrait of Emperor Galba. Here, the laurel wreath, adorning Galba's brow, signifies victory and imperial status, echoing the wreaths worn by triumphant Roman generals and emperors. Notice how the commanding presence of the rider and steed transcends time. Like the Marcus Aurelius statue in Rome, this pose harkens back to classical antiquity. Yet, it also anticipates future equestrian portraits of monarchs and military leaders. Consider, too, the horse's elaborate trappings, embellished with lion heads. Since antiquity, the lion represents courage, strength, and kingship, and can be found on shields and heraldic crests across Europe. It reflects a deep-seated psychological need to assert dominance and authority. Thus, the image is laden with symbols of power that resonate with our collective memory. This visual language continues to shape our understanding of leadership today.
