This image of the Madonna and Child in a Rosary was printed at an unknown time by an anonymous artist. It’s made from a woodcut, a relatively accessible medium by which an image is carved in relief on a block of wood, inked, and then printed onto paper or parchment. The choice of wood as a base material is key. Woodcuts lend themselves to bold, graphic images; carving along the grain creates strong lines. In this image, the material imparts a sense of strength to the iconic figures, Mary and Jesus, with their surroundings. This strength is interesting because while traditionally, the woodcut was considered a more democratic medium than say, painting, in this case, the print is adorned with gold leaf. Looking at this print, we can consider how this art material has been utilized to convey not only the message of devotion, but to elevate it with costly details. By understanding the materials and processes employed in its creation, we deepen our appreciation for its cultural and social meaning.
