Lech Jankowski made this drawing called 'Hodowla pasków' on paper, and you can see how the process of making really shines through. There’s a beautiful lightness to the whole thing, a delicate balance between the detailed little stools and the more gestural, shadowy forms hovering above. Look closely, and you can see how the artist built up these shapes with countless tiny, parallel lines, creating a soft, almost vibrating texture. The monochromatic palette really emphasizes the tactile quality of the marks. The stools are so fragile, so tentative. I love the way the little stools are shadowed, as if their forms were echoed in the ether above. This piece reminds me of work by Agnes Martin, who also used repetition and subtle variations to create meditative, ethereal compositions. Like Martin, Jankowski invites us to slow down, to contemplate the subtle nuances of line, tone, and texture, and to find beauty in the quiet rhythms of the everyday.
