Jose Escada made ‘Pensando em Chartres’ with oil on canvas, and it’s just vibrating with colour and light. You can tell that this painting was a process of building up layers, little universes of colour. I love how Escada uses a dark background, like a night sky, to make the vibrant circles pop. The paint isn’t too thick, it’s applied in these careful, almost pointillist dots. Look at how the circles cluster together, creating shapes within shapes. There’s a real sense of rhythm here. The eye dances around, never quite settling, always finding new combinations of colour. It makes me think about how stained glass windows scatter light in all directions. Escada's work reminds me of Hilma af Klint, who also used geometric shapes and vibrant colours to express something beyond the visible world. Ultimately, this piece is about embracing the beauty of ambiguity. It celebrates the idea that art can be a doorway to endless interpretations.
