This reconstruction presents the head of a Riace Warrior, from Ancient Greece, made with bronze and other materials. The original statues, discovered in the sea, are renowned for their incredible detail and the mastery of bronze casting, requiring a high level of technical skill, and suggesting specialist workshops in the ancient world. The lost-wax technique used, allowed the sculptor to create intricate details, such as the warrior's curly beard, and even the texture of his skin. Consider the labor involved in procuring the materials. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin, and the process of mining, smelting, and transporting these materials would have involved considerable human effort. This reconstruction, like the originals, shows a society where artistry, technology, and labor converge. Looking at this head, we are reminded that objects carry cultural information. It challenges our traditional notions of art history, by valuing not only aesthetics but also the processes and labor that bring art to life.
