Julie Bell’s ‘Three Hungry Wolves’ appears to have been made with traditional oil painting techniques. Bell uses her medium to great effect, employing a glazing technique which helps build up the depth and color on the canvas. This process, where thin layers of paint are applied over and over, creates a unique luminosity, giving the wolves a lifelike appearance. Bell’s decision to embellish the wolves with what appears to be golden finery introduces an element of craft into the painting, as well as a subtle commentary on themes of adornment and value, questioning our relationship with the natural world, and the social constructs we project onto it. By carefully considering the materials and processes involved, we can appreciate the artist's skillful manipulation of her medium, and the ways in which she blurs the boundaries between fine art and craft, while inviting us to reflect on humanity’s complex relationship with nature.
