Moritz Calisch created this portrait of Mr. C. Meder using lithography, a printmaking technique that allowed for more affordable reproductions, during a time of significant social and political change in the Netherlands. Calisch, who was of Jewish heritage, lived during a period when Jewish people were fighting for equal rights and representation. This portrait offers a glimpse into the identity of the sitter, portraying Mr. Meder with a poised demeanor which invites us to consider how social standing was presented and perceived in the 19th century. The detailed rendering of his clothing and features speaks to the importance of visual representation in affirming one's place in society. Through the use of lithography, Calisch democratized portraiture, challenging the traditional association of portraiture with wealth and aristocracy, and raising questions about who has the right to be seen and remembered.
