Johanna van de Kamer made this drawing of two ploughing horses with pencil at some point. It feels like a first thought, a sketch to get something down, like the start of an idea, but so complete in its own right. Look at the way the pencil lines define the horses, so minimal, yet so descriptive. It's all about the flow, the gesture of the line. See how she uses cross-hatching to give the horses weight and volume, especially around their legs? It’s not about perfection, it's about capturing the essence. The field almost fades into the background, the horses are there but the rest isn’t. I’m reminded of Käthe Kollwitz’s drawings, that same raw, emotional quality. This drawing feels like a testament to the everyday, the beauty in the mundane, a celebration of work, and the animals that help us. It’s a simple drawing, but it speaks volumes.
