This "Bank met twee bijbehorende kastjes" was made with wood and velvet by E.G.C. Schubad. I’m not sure exactly when it was made, but that fuzzy velvet makes me think of curling up for a good, long afternoon nap. This piece is interesting because, although it is furniture, it also plays with form. Look at the way the velvet has worn over time, and how the velvet and wood have aged together. See how the wood is exposed at the bottom? It’s all straight lines and geometry. It makes me think about the difference between soft and hard, worn and stable. The way the light hits the wood and the velvet, it seems to have a life of its own. It reminds me a bit of a Donald Judd sculpture, but one you can sit on! Art is always this ongoing conversation, and this couch is part of that too, it has something to say.
