Alison Knowles's *Music*, performed in New York in 1964, seems like a photograph of a street happening. There's a sense of anticipation, that something is about to happen, or maybe it's already over. I imagine Knowles deeply in concentration, holding a long, dark object, maybe a fur stole? The material, whatever it is, seems to have a life of its own. I can sense how heavy it is, how it might feel to hold it. Someone is holding up a sign to tell us what’s going on, sort of. The setting is urban, a street becoming a stage. I bet Knowles and her friends were riffing off each other, feeding off the energy of the city, and I feel the sense of playful experimentation and collective creativity. Knowles's willingness to experiment with form and medium, her openness to chance, and her collaborative spirit remind me that artists are always in conversation, pushing the boundaries of what art can be.
