Curatorial notes

This hand-colored albumen print shows a street scene in Japan. It was created at a time when photography was still a relatively new medium, and images like this were often seen as a way to document and understand the wider world. The photograph presents a clear view down a traditional Japanese street, lined with buildings and telegraph poles. The composition creates a sense of depth, inviting the viewer to explore the scene. During the late 19th century, Japan underwent rapid modernization and Westernization, which can be seen in the mix of traditional architecture and modern technology. This photograph could have been made for a variety of reasons - from a commercial venture, to satisfy Western audiences interested in Japanese culture, or maybe even as a tool for the Japanese government to document and promote their progress. By studying photographs like this, alongside historical documents and accounts, we can gain a deeper understanding of the complex social and cultural changes that were taking place in Japan at the time.
