Gillis Smak Gregoor created this drawing of cows, fishermen and a woman in the late 18th or early 19th century, using pen and brown ink, accented with brush and gray wash. The drawing exemplifies the artist's skill with line and tonal variation. The ink, likely iron gall, allowed for fine detailing, capturing the texture of the cows' hides, and the subtle gradations of light across the landscape. The gray wash, applied with a brush, softens the scene, lending depth and atmosphere to the composition. Smak Gregoor’s drawing speaks to the agrarian lifestyle, and perhaps points to a moment in which rural life was being sentimentalized, even as industrialization began to shift the nature of work and production. The labor is present, but rendered in a harmonious and picturesque manner, far removed from the harsh realities of agricultural work. Ultimately, the value of this work lies not only in its aesthetic appeal, but also in its ability to capture a specific moment in the history of labor and landscape. By considering the materials and processes, we gain a deeper understanding of its cultural significance, and the stories it has to tell.
