David Young Cameron made this landscape, Nithsdale, with drypoint. Can you feel the artist’s hand moving across the plate, scraping away to reveal the image? I imagine Cameron standing there, probably in a field, squinting in the sun, trying to capture the expanse of the land, and he's thinking about how to compress the three-dimensional world onto a flat surface, and you can really feel that struggle in the way the lines are laid down. Look at the diagonal strokes in the foreground – they give it such a sense of depth, like you could just walk right into the scene! It's not just a picture; it's an invitation to enter a space and wonder about it. Cameron is in conversation with other painters, sharing ideas and approaches to capture the world around them. Each artist brings their perspective to the canvas, enriching our understanding. We see, think, and experience the world through the act of painting.
