Xavier Mellery’s print, *Two Monks Before a Monastery Gate*, presents us with a study in contrasts, articulated through the incisive strokes of etching. The composition draws you in, from the geometric precision of the steps and the angular wall to the rounded arch above the monks. Consider how Mellery uses line and form here. The hatching and cross-hatching create a chiaroscuro effect, heightening the contrast between light and shadow. This isn't just about aesthetics; it's about creating a symbolic space. The monks, positioned at the threshold, become liminal figures, caught between the earthly and the spiritual, their robes rendered with just enough detail to suggest both presence and anonymity. The building itself, etched with a network of lines, appears almost skeletal, a structure of rigid verticals and horizontals which contain an ethereal scene.
