Charles Demuth sketched "Two Women and Child on Beach" with watercolor and graphite, maybe in the early 20th century. Isn't it interesting how a few marks can evoke such a sense of place? The beach is rendered with the bare minimum of brushstrokes, almost like a memory. The colours, muted and watery, bleed into one another, creating a hazy atmosphere, and you can sense a real feeling of freedom in Demuth’s breezy handling of the pigment. Look at the way the figures are barely defined, just a few washes of colour suggest their presence. The standing figure, with its salmon colored dress, strikes me in particular. It’s like Demuth is whispering secrets, leaving us to fill in the blanks. This reminds me a lot of Manet's approach, capturing a fleeting moment with just a few strokes. Like a visual haiku, it’s as much about what’s left unsaid as what’s actually there.
