Bice Lazzari made 524-A with lines on a surface, seemingly without color but actually full of tone. I think of this as a drawing; Lazzari is exploring the basics, using line and direction to make a world. The layered marks create density and texture. Look closely, and you can see the subtle differences in the weight and pressure of each line. It is as if Lazzari builds up the composition stroke by stroke, each mark carefully considered. What I see here is a kind of world-making, built up from pure sensation. The surface feels open, like a landscape, like architecture, like music. I am reminded of the composer Agnes Martin, who created a similar emotional space with her minimal forms. Both artists share a dedication to the process of creation, revealing a deep understanding of the poetic potential of abstraction.
