Editor: We're looking at a "Achterlaadgeweer met lade en afneembare skeletkolf", or a Breech-loading rifle with drawer and detachable skeleton stock, dating from approximately 1665 to 1775. It is made of metal and wood and it's here at the Rijksmuseum. The thing that strikes me first is its bizarre form - the negative space in the stock is quite interesting. What do you see in this piece? Curator: Let's consider the rifle's aesthetic components, disassociating it from its function as a weapon. Note the strong, continuous line formed by the barrel. Its rigid horizontality creates a powerful visual anchor. That's beautifully offset by the curvilinear forms of the wooden stock, whose polished surface reflects light in subtle gradations. Do you observe the contrast between the wood's warmth and the metal's coolness? Editor: I do. It's a strange combination, almost like organic meets machine, but before there were machines, exactly. So, is it just about these lines, the forms, the feel of it? Surely there's more. Curator: Consider how the 'skeleton' stock functions visually. It plays with positive and negative space, creating an interplay of solids and voids that draws the eye. This articulation transforms the functional element into an exercise of form. Its materiality has been elevated, do you agree? Editor: Yes, that is really interesting! Thinking about the design as purely formal… I'm starting to see how we can look beyond what something *is* to what it *looks like*. Thank you. Curator: Indeed. Approaching the object in such a way opens up possibilities, a pathway to grasping intention through observation, line by line.
