Dirk Kuipers rendered this coastal scene with ships and fisherman using pen and brown ink, and grey wash on paper. The effect achieved with such simple materials is quite remarkable. The skillful use of ink and wash creates a soft, atmospheric perspective. Kuipers applied thin washes to build up tonal variations, giving the rocks and water depth and volume. Notice the subtle gradations of light and shadow, achieved with precise control of the brush. The monochrome palette emphasizes the graphic quality of the drawing. The artist's choice of materials speaks to a tradition of draftsmanship rooted in careful observation. Kuipers creates a dynamic composition with a restricted range of materials. This is a piece where we see an artist making the most of very little, with great sensitivity. It shows how the hand of a skilled draftsman can create a compelling image from everyday materials.
