Somewhere in the middle of the last century, Remedios Varo painted this still life, conjuring up a space both familiar and otherworldly. I can imagine her, carefully building up the texture of the walls with tiny, precise marks. It’s a world suspended between dream and reality. I wonder what Varo was thinking as she rendered those apples and plates, set in motion around the candle's glow. The light seems to emanate not just from the candle, but from the objects themselves. The plates are like satellites frozen in time, orbiting this strange domestic planet, and the fruit is like a harvest for the gods. Varo made the unseen seen, finding magic in everyday objects, just like Giorgio de Chirico or Leonora Carrington. There's a sense of humor here, too, like she's playing a trick on us. Like so much painting, it embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing us to bring our own stories and associations to the table.
