Curatorial notes
This small card from the Old Judge series, made by Goodwin & Company, features Edward Enoch "Jersey" Bakely, a pitcher for Cleveland. Part of a series inserted into cigarette packs, it reflects baseball's rising popularity in the late 19th century. Consider what it meant to portray athletes in this way, connecting them with a product like cigarettes. The image captures Bakely in what seems to be an active, indicative pose, yet it is staged, manufactured, and reproduced. In this sense, the card becomes a comment on celebrity and consumer culture, where identity is curated and commodified. As such, It's both a celebration of athletic prowess and an early example of sports marketing. The sepia tones and small format lend it a nostalgic quality, a reminder of a bygone era when baseball cards were a novel way to connect with one's heroes.
