This engraving, “Man berispt een andere man” or “Man Reproaching Another Man”, was made by Reinier Vinkeles. Vinkeles used etching and engraving, a printmaking process involving laborious work. Lines are incised into a metal plate with a sharp tool; the plate is then inked, and the ink held in these lines is transferred to paper under great pressure. Look closely and you can see how the cross-hatched lines create a sense of depth, and how the varying density of lines builds up tone and shadow. Engraving was a painstaking process, requiring both technical skill and artistic vision. Vinkeles was known for the precision and clarity of his lines, and he was well-regarded in his time, when printed imagery was in high demand. Considering the meticulous nature of the engraving process reminds us that even seemingly simple images are the result of skilled labor and material knowledge. It challenges the traditional distinction between fine art and craft, highlighting the importance of making and process in understanding the full meaning of the work.
