Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this study sheet with figure studies in the Netherlands. Cachet was a Dutch artist prominent in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, whose work reflects the cultural milieu of the Netherlands during a period of significant social and artistic change. In this sketch we can see figures, hands and a building in the bottom right, but it’s the very incompleteness of this sketch which makes it interesting. As an artist, Cachet would have been reliant on institutions such as art schools for his training. This sketch is part of that training, it’s an exercise of the eye and hand as much as it is a study of a subject. We should remember that it is only through institutions such as museums, galleries, and schools that art continues to be created and evolve. The meaning of art is contingent on social and institutional context, it's through careful historical research we can better appreciate it.
