Godfried Maes created this drawing of Saint Margaret in the late 17th century with pen and brush, using brown ink and gray wash over graphite. The use of line and wash here is deceptive, it might seem simple, but actually requires great skill. The artist would have had to master the techniques of mixing the wash to the right consistency, applying it with sensitivity to the paper, and using the pen to create sharp, controlled lines. He creates light and shadow, form and texture to create a sense of depth and movement. The paper itself also has an important role to play. Its texture and color affect the way the ink and wash are absorbed, creating subtle variations in tone and depth. It is a reminder that even the simplest of materials, when used with skill and intention, can be transformed into something of great beauty and expressive power. It’s in this sense that this drawing challenges us to look beyond the surface and appreciate the artistry of the making process.
