Charles Garjian made this tonal study of a Woman's Shoe, but when? There's no date. I imagine him at his desk, pencil in hand, teasing out the subtle shades of grey to describe the form. The object feels so precisely observed, yet the image as a whole remains somehow loose and ambiguous. It's the kind of drawing that comes from really looking at something—I mean, *really* looking, taking your time to understand how light falls across the surface, how the different parts connect. Notice the way the buttons cast shadows, creating a rhythmic pattern along the side of the boot. The artist wants us to see the shape, texture, and even the potential movement held within this static object. I think of artists like Morandi, endlessly depicting the same bottles, each time trying to get closer to the essence of the thing. It’s like they're not just drawing an object but trying to capture a feeling, a memory, a moment in time. And maybe, just maybe, that's what Garjian was doing too.
