Vegetal 1977

Ligia Macovei created this oil painting, entitled "Vegetal," at an unknown date. Its ambiguous forms invite us to consider the position of abstraction within the visual culture of mid-twentieth century Romania. The image is dominated by a palette of green and punctuated by bright yellows and reds. The brushwork appears spontaneous, as though directly capturing the artist’s inner vision. During the postwar period, Romanian artists were expected to produce Socialist Realist works that promoted the values of the communist regime. Yet Macovei’s painting seems to resist such instrumentalization.
