Wang Xinfu’s ‘Winter Campus’ seems to be made of pure, unadulterated texture. The painting is built up of countless strokes that feel almost sculptural; it's like the artist was wrestling with the paint, coaxing it into form. There’s a real physicality to the medium here, the brushstrokes stand out in relief. You can almost imagine the artist’s hand moving across the canvas, laying down each stroke with intention. Look at the way the light catches on the surface, creating shadows and highlights that add to the sense of depth. The tones are muted, dominated by greens and ochres, perhaps echoing a memory of the campus, drained of its vitality by the cold. It reminds me of the landscapes of Courbet, where the earth itself seems to come alive on the canvas. It’s a reminder that art is a conversation, a constant dialogue between artists across time and space.
