Curatorial notes
This photograph, taken by Shepherd & Robertson, captures six members of the royal family of Delhi. The sepia tones and the composition of the figures arranged in a contained, almost theatrical space, offer a structured glimpse into a bygone era. The subjects are meticulously placed, creating a visual hierarchy, with the central figure seated and elevated, flanked by standing members and smaller figures seated on the floor. The use of light and shadow further accentuates the textures of the elaborate garments and regal bearing of the subjects. The photograph's composition reflects the formality and rigidity characteristic of the time, but also hints at the complexities of cultural representation and power dynamics inherent in colonial photography. In its very structure, the photograph operates as a cultural artifact, inviting us to consider the ways in which images mediate our understanding of history and identity.
