Curatorial notes
This is a saddlebag, measuring 58 by 62 centimeters, woven by the Jaffi people. The bag's geometric designs speak to a rich cultural heritage, a visual language passed down through generations. Textiles like this weren’t just functional; they were a vibrant expression of identity, a testament to the weaver's skill and the community's shared history. The so-called swastika flowers are particularly interesting given how this symbol has been culturally appropriated. This design element reminds us how symbols gain different meanings depending on place and time. The bag’s colors and patterns evoke a sense of warmth and familiarity. Imagine the hands that crafted each knot, the stories embedded in every thread. It's a powerful reminder of the human connection woven into the very fabric of our lives.
