Editor: So, this etching by Willy Jaeckel, "Kaal landschap met een naakte man en vrouw in omhelzing," created sometime between 1898 and 1944…it’s, well, intensely romantic. The stark landscape combined with the figures embracing, it’s really powerful. What do you see in it? Curator: Powerful, yes! And also, I find it surprisingly vulnerable. Think about the time it was made – a period of immense social upheaval. I wonder, is Jaeckel searching for solace in the primal connection between man and woman, a return to something pure amidst the chaos? Look at the sun’s rays, almost like bars – is that a symbol of restriction or is it the warmth of love? I’d argue, a bit of both, don't you think? Editor: That's an interesting read – a search for purity. I was focused more on the starkness of it all, the bare landscape almost accentuating their vulnerability, but your point really opens up a whole new perspective. Were such subjects controversial then? Curator: Undoubtedly! Nudes were one thing, but to place them within this raw, exposed landscape, suggests that Jaeckel isn’t simply depicting the sensual, it's very personal and quite defiant, almost spiritual. Do you see it now? The Romanticism label truly holds! Editor: I do! I was caught up in the visual, the greyscale of the medium but understanding that there is also something rebellious makes it more nuanced for sure! Curator: Exactly, it adds a new layer, doesn't it? I always walk away thinking, the image wants to speak, are you ready to listen? Editor: Makes you wonder about his own life, what was he embracing, what was he running from? This was great!
