This is Remigius Hogenberg's etching "Opstanding van Christus" or "Resurrection of Christ," created sometime in the late 16th century. Hogenberg lived in a tumultuous period marked by the Reformation, a movement which challenged the Catholic Church's authority. Here, Christ is depicted emerging triumphantly from his tomb, a beacon of light against the darkness. But it’s the reactions of the soldiers guarding the tomb that grab our attention. They are thrown into disarray, their bodies twisting and contorting in fear and confusion. It makes you wonder if Hogenberg is trying to tell us something about the turmoil of his own era? The old order being upended, traditional beliefs challenged by new ideas. This piece resonates with anyone who has experienced the upheaval of change. It reminds us that even in moments of chaos, there is the possibility of renewal, rebirth, and, yes, even resurrection.
