James McNeill Whistler created this painting of the industrial Thames using oil on canvas. His approach to applying the paint is interesting, because he handled it in such a way as to evoke a sense of the modern world at work. The painting is characterized by its muted tones and loose brushwork, creating a hazy, almost dreamlike atmosphere. Notice how the industrial structures in the background blend seamlessly with the natural elements. The factory chimneys, symbols of industry, appear as soft, blurred forms, while the river reflects the light in shimmering strokes of silver and grey. Whistler wasn’t interested in precise representation, but more in capturing the essence of the scene – the sensory experience of being there. This captures a very modern sensibility, and in doing so, questions traditional notions of what constitutes a worthy subject for art, and how a painting should be made. This artwork asks us to consider art’s relationship to everyday life, labor, and the changing urban landscape.
