Isabel Wachenheimer-Elon created these loose sheets of poems and a drawing at an unknown date. They are made with humble materials: paper, pen and pencil. The poems are handwritten, giving us an intimate insight into Wachenheimer-Elon’s life and thoughts. There is a sense of immediacy, like a direct transcription of thought onto paper. The drawing of Else-Puppe is quickly sketched. The visible traces of the artist's hand in both the writing and drawing give these works a palpable sense of presence, and the labor involved adds to the artworks' value. These sheets seem so delicate and fragile; they speak of a deep and intense life. These are not traditional art materials, but rather everyday materials used to produce personal and intimate artworks, and this challenges conventional hierarchies between high art and craft. We can consider the artist's position, the materials available to her, and the broader social context in which she was working. Ultimately, this work shows the significance of materials, making, and context in understanding the full meaning of art.
