Robert Frank made this photograph, "Man being interviewed--Omaha, Nebraska," using black and white film. The image is about a moment, but there's something about the grittiness of the blacks and the way the light falls that makes it feel like it's about a process too. The texture of the image is raw, like you could almost feel the grain of the film. The blacks aren't solid, they're broken up, uneven. It’s like the image itself is breathing, full of life and light. Look at the man's hands, folded together. You can almost feel the age, the stories they hold. His face, etched with lines, tells a story of its own. Frank’s work has this way of showing you the beauty in the everyday, the poetry in the mundane. You could see this in the work of Garry Winogrand, a photographer also interested in capturing the moment, but without the same emotional depth. It’s about seeing the world, not as it is, but as it feels.
