Curatorial notes
This is Noach van der Meer the Younger’s etching, "Dienstmeid gooit een portretbuste uit het raam," housed at the Rijksmuseum. The scene, rendered in stark monochrome, divides our attention between the architecture and the lively narrative. The composition is structured around vertical and horizontal lines, creating a sense of depth and order. The texture of the brickwork, the cobblestones and the foliage contrasts with the smooth surfaces of the building. The main action—the maid tossing a bust—occurs at the upper right, balanced by the image of a playful dog in the lower left. The act of throwing the bust challenges the traditional role of art as a symbol of permanence and reverence, and raises questions about cultural norms and social hierarchies. The maid’s act becomes a powerful commentary on authority and the subversion of established values. The piece questions the nature of representation, inviting us to consider how we assign meaning to images.
