These calendars for August, June and December 1904 were made by Theo van Hoytema. The colors are quiet, almost muted, like watercolors that have been left in the sun too long. It's a lovely reminder that artmaking is a process, not just about the finished product, right? Look closely, and you'll notice the texture of the paper and how the colors sink into it, it makes it seem like the whole piece could crumble into dust at any moment. The way the birds are rendered feels intuitive. The one in August, standing in the water, the water rings feel so alive, right? They give the piece a sense of depth, of movement, as though the bird had only just landed. It reminds me of the work of Walter Crane, another artist who embraced decorative design. Ultimately, art is a conversation, an exchange of ideas across time. It's about embracing ambiguity, and multiple interpretations over fixed meanings.
